Pineapple

The pineapple is indigenous to South America where it has been cultivated for many centuries. The introduction of the pineapple to Europe in the 17 century made it a significant cultural icon of luxury. Since the 1820s, pineapple has been commercially grown in greenhouses and many tropical plantations.

Based on TCM, pineapple can be used to:

  1. disperses summer heat
  2. creates body fluids
  3. thirst quenching
  4. diuretic
  5. promotes digestion

The preparation methods are raw, juice, or decoction.

Pineapple contains high water content, few calories, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc, valuable fruit acids, vitamin C, and bromelain enzyme (promotes protein digestion!)

Vinegar

While vinegar-making may be as old as alcoholic brewing, the first documented evidence of vinegar-making and use was by the ancient Babylonians around 3000 BC.

They primarily made vinegar from dates, figs, and beer and used it for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Traces of it also have been found in Egyptian urns. In East Asia, the Chinese began professionalizing vinegar production in the Zhou dynasty.

Based on TCM, vinegar can be used to:

  1. stops bleeding (hemostatic)
  2. disperses blood and qi stagnation
  3. detoxifies
  4. promotes digestion

Preparation methods of vinegar are as a seasoning, diluted in water, and as a decoction.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, acetal, oxalic acid, acetaldehyde, minerals, acids, and alcohols of higher quality.

Some indications that can be reduced by vinegar are:

 * Blood stasis: pain in the abdomen, palpable hardness in the abdomen.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce (also called simply soy in American English and sometimes soya sauce in British English) is a liquid condiment of Chinese origin, traditionally made from a fermented paste of soybean roasted grain, brine, and Aspergillus oryzae or Aspergillus sojae molds. It is considered to contain a strong umami flavor.

Soy sauce in its current form was created about 2,200 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty of ancient China, and it has spread throughout East and Southeast Asia where it is used in cooking and as a condiment.

Seaweed

Seaweed lacks a formal definition, but seaweed generally lives in the ocean and is visible to the naked eye. The term refers to both flowering plants submerged in the ocean, like eelgrass, as well as larger marine algae.

Based on TCM, seaweed can be used to:

  1. clears heat
  2. moistens dryness
  3. transforms phlegm
  4. softens the hardness
  5. enriches yin, and diuretic.

Preparation methods of seaweed are fresh or dried, boiled, as a soup ingredient, as a decoction, as salad, as a pill or powder.

Seaweed contains 41 minerals and trace elements, an unsurpassed source of iodine, vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K.

Salt

Salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in the form of a natural crystalline mineral is known as rock salt or halite. Salt is present in vast quantities in seawater. The open ocean has about 35 grams (1.2 oz) of solids per liter of seawater, a salinity of 3.5%.

Based on TCM, salt can be used to:

  1. clears heat
  2. cools the blood
  3. moistens dryness
  4. down bears qi
  5. strengthens kidneys
  6. loosens phlegm.

The preparation methods of salt are as seasoning and dissolved in warm or hot water.

Some indications that can be reduced by salt are:

 * Kidney yin and yang vacuity: supplements the kidney organ network when taken in moderation.
