Chili

The chili pepper (also chile, chile pepper, chili pepper, or chili), is the berry-fruit of plants from the genus Capsicum which are members of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Chili peppers are widely used in many cuisines as a spice to add pungent 'heat' to dishes.

Chili peppers originated in Mexico. After the Columbian Exchange, many cultivars of chili pepper spread worldwide, used for food and traditional medicine.

Based on TCM, chili can be used to:

  1. dissipates cold
  2. warms the center burner
  3. dissolves food stagnation
  4. produces sweat
  5. dries dampness.

The preparation methods of chili are mainly as a seasoning; raw and fried, in soups.

Chili is rich in capsaicin and 2H-capsaicin, essential oils, vitamins C, A, and E, phosphorus, and calcium.

Some indications that can be reduced by chili are:

 * Wind–cold disorders: Flu, common cold, with an aversion to cold; shivering.

Oat

The oat (Avena sativa), sometimes called the common oat, is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed.

Oats are best grown in temperate regions. They have a lower summer heat requirement and greater tolerance to rain than other cereals, such as wheat, rye, or barley, so they are particularly important in areas with cool, wet summers, such as Northwest Europe and even Iceland. Oats are an annual plant and can be planted either in autumn (for late summer harvest) or in the spring (for early autumn harvest).

Based on TCM, oat can be used to:

  1. supplements qi and blood
  2. moves qi
  3. strengthens nerves, muscles, and sinews
  4. dispels dampness.

The preparation methods of oats are decoction, ground, porridge, or rolled oats.

Oat contains especially valuable protein (contains all essential amino acids), fat, vitamins B1 and B2, calcium, iron, manganese, silicon, and zinc.

Tomato

Tomato originated in western South America and Central America.

Tomato plants typically grow to 1–3 meters (3–10 ft) in height. They are vines that have a weak stem that sprawls and typically needs support.

Based on TCM, tomato can be used to:

  1. clears heat
  2. produces fluids and removes dryness
  3. cools and cleans the blood
  4. strengthens the stomach
  5. promotes liver network activity

Tomato can be consumed raw, as juice, boiled, sautéed, or as a decoction.

Tomato contains high in vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, zinc, cobalt, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, essential oils, natural hormones, and oxalic acid (caution in case of kidney stones!)

Some indications that can be reduced by tomatoes are:

 * Heat in blood: nosebleeds, skin disorders with itching, reddened cutaneous efflorescence, sun allergy, and seasonal allergies.

Lettuce

 

Lettuce is an annual plant of the daisy family, Asteraceae.

Lettuce was originally farmed by the ancient Egyptians, who transformed it from a plant whose seeds were used to obtain oil into an important food crop raised for its succulent leaves and oil-rich seeds.

Based on TCM, lettuce can be used to:

  1. clears heat
  2. diuretic
  3. stimulates milk flow.

The preparation methods are raw, boiled, or decoction.

Lettuce contains calcium, vitamins A and C, and chlorophyll (stored primarily in outer leaves).

Some indications that this vegetable can reduce are:

 * General heat symptoms and heat in the bladder: restlessness, thirst, nervousness, micturition (urination) problems, burning sensation when urinating; sparse, and dark urine.

 * Disturbance of milk flow after birth.

Traditional Herbal Medicine around Us: Honey

Bees produce honey from the sugary secretions of plants (floral nectar) or from secretions of other insects (such as honeydew), by regurgitation, enzymatic activity, and water evaporation. Honey bees store honey in wax structures called honeycombs, whereas stingless bees store honey in pots made of wax and resin.

Based on TCM, honey can be used to:

  1. moistens the intestines
  2. nourishes the lungs and stops coughing
  3. nourishes the spleen and stomach
  4. relieves pain
  5. eliminates toxins.

Some indications that can be treated by this herb with specific dosage and formulation are dry stool, constipation, dry cough, spleen, and stomach deficiencies, assists herbal preparations by protecting the spleen and stomach, heat toxins of the skin, and ingestion of poisonous substances.

The pharmacological effect of honey is hepatoprotective and antibiotic.
